What is SSDI and How much can i receive?

Although there are some other less common programs, most people who apply for disability will be applying for either SSI or SSDI. SSDI, also known as “regular disability” or “DIB,” is a program under the same general umbrella as retirement and survivor’s benefits. That means that like Social Security retirement, it is based on the money that you paid in while you were working.

You must have worked to qualify for SSDI. While younger people (below 30) might qualify with less time working, most people need to have paid in Social Security taxes for at least 5 of the last 10 years to qualify for SSDI. The person is then considered “insured,” which just means that they have worked enough to apply for SSDI if they become disabled.

How much you will receive on SSDI is based on how much you paid in, just like retirement. So someone who worked part time for 6 years will likely be insured, but may not receive a high payment. On the other hand, someone who worked full time for many years can often receive a significant payment under SSDI. In 2024, the minimum payment for SSDI was $200 and the maximum payment is $3,822.
