Social Security Disability and Part Time Work

Can I work while I wait for disability?

Disability and working: What is allowed?

To apply for Social Security Disability and/or SSI, you cannot be working full-time.

If you’re not working, then you can apply. Social Security looks at actual work, not at employment. So if you’re still technically employed but on medical or disability leave, you can apply for disability.

If you’re working part time, you can only apply if you’re working below what is called “Substantial Gainful Activity” or SGA. For 2022, SGA is $1,350 (although it goes up to $2,260 for the blind). If you’re making less than SGA, then you can apply for disability. Some people can apply over that amount, but only if your work is accommodated or if they meet other specific exceptions.

If you want to apply for disability but have questions about if you qualify based on part time work, please call us at (985) 626-1002. We will get your information and set up a free consultation at our office in Mandeville, Louisiana.
